When you’re thinking about what to wear to your engagement session, I want you to know that you’re not going to be figuring out everything alone. When my couples book with me, I consider it my job as your photographer… to show you the ropes. You don’t know what photographs well! You don’t know exactly what will move with the poses we’re going to do.
It’s truly one of my favorite things about working with couples is helping them feel confident and fully themselves in front of the camera.
A huge part of that comes from wardrobe planning. Before every session, I walk my couples through outfit styling so their looks complement the location, photograph beautifully, and feel cohesive together.

For this couple, I knew we were beginning our downtown Chicago session in a local coffee shop. It had charming exposed brick walls and warm natural textures. The vibe in the shop was relaxed, modern, and intimate. So we planned their outfits around that!
The bride wore a soft cream mini dress with statement floral heels, while the groom paired a fitted black polo with tailored gray trousers and sleek black sneakers. The combination felt polished without trying too hard. And it fit in seamlessly with their location choice!
The neutral tones complemented the warm wood tables and brick interiors, and the slightly elevated casual style made the entire set of photos feel really cohesive.

Not only does it add variety to your gallery, but it also allows the session to evolve naturally.
For the second half of this engagement session, the couple changed into more formal attire near a stunning historic building and fountain courtyard.
Her elegant ivory gown with soft draping and a high slit instantly created a more romantic, editorial feel. His light trousers and blazer elevated the overall look while still feeling timeless and relaxed.
The transition between locations and outfits gave the gallery so much depth. We captured playful sidewalk moments outside the coffee shop, then shifted into more cinematic & editorial portraits around the grand architecture and marble interiors.

The best engagement galleries are never just about pretty locations or trendy outfits. They’re about creating an experience that reflects who you are together.
The posing becomes more natural, the movement feels natural, and the final images feel personal (instead of overly manufactured).
That’s why styling guidance is such an important part of my process. Your session should feel cohesive from beginning to end, and your wardrobe plays a huge role in bringing that vision to life.
