If you’re newly engaged and already dreaming about your 2027 celebration, congratulations! Planning your wedding is such an exciting season. If you are starting to build the team that will bring your vision to life, this post is for you.

As a Chicago editorial wedding photographer, I have had the privilege of documenting dozens of couples on their big day. I have seen a few things that really make a big impact in the planning process.

Especially when it comes to your photographer!

The reality is: your photographer will be by your side for almost every part of the day. That’s why it’s worth looking beyond pretty photos and finding someone whose approach truly matches the experience you want.

Here are three things to keep in mind as you begin your search.

Choose a Photography Style That Feels Like You

Every photographer tells a wedding story differently. Some lean heavily into traditional portraits, while others focus on documentary moments or editorial imagery.

Before booking, ask yourself what you want to remember years from now.

  • Candid moments with your favorite people
  • Editorial portraits with a fashion-inspired feel
  • Genuine emotion over perfectly posed moments
  • A gallery that feels timeless instead of trendy
  • Family portraits and formal poses

The best galleries often blend these styles together, creating a cohesive picture. But most photographers have specialties that they have studied & invested in learning. Not all photographers have mastered every style of photography. If you have a clear definition of the type of images that you want, make sure to ask your photographer about it beforehand.

And if you’re not sure the term for the photography you like, make a Pinterest board and show it to potential photographers to see if their galleries align.

Getting clarity on what style of photography you’re looking for will help you find an incredibly aligned photographer while planning your wedding.

Planning Your Wedding Means Understanding Digital and Film Photography

Film photography has become incredibly popular, but not all film is the same. This is the one thing I wish all engaged couples knew!

Shooting professional film requires intention, technical knowledge, and years of experience. It is much more than using a disposable or point-and-shoot camera.

Blending digital and film photography creates a wedding gallery with beautiful variety. Digital allows for flexibility throughout the day, while film naturally slows things down. It encourages those dreamy nostalgic moments to unfold without forcing them. The result is a collection of images that is equally refined, and full of emotion.

When your photographer understands both mediums, you receive the best of each while preserving your day in a truly timeless way. But, it’s an important distinction to ask about when chatting with photographers about film photography. Are they bringing a backup point & shoot film camera? Or are they truly documenting the day on film as well as digital.

An Experienced Vendor Creates a Seamless Wedding Day

Luxury weddings often involve detailed timelines, large vendor teams, and thoughtful design. Having a photographer who has worked in these environments brings an incredible sense of confidence to the day.

An experienced photographer knows how to navigate changing weather, timeline adjustments, family dynamics, and unexpected moments without adding stress. Instead of worrying about what happens behind the scenes, you get to stay present and enjoy every part of your celebration.

That peace of mind is one of the most valuable investments you can make.

Your Wedding Photos Should Feel Like Your Story

As you begin planning your wedding, remember that your photography is about so much more than creating beautiful images. You’re choosing someone who will guide you, support you, and preserve the moments you’ll treasure for the rest of your life.

Finding someone whose style, experience, and approach align with your vision will make your entire wedding day feel more relaxed, meaningful, and unforgettable.
